Dear Friends: For those who know me, no explanation is needed, but to you who do not, here is my plight. My son Adam was injured in a diving accident on Aug 1, 1999. He suffered a Spinal Cord Injury which has left him a quadriplegic. His hope, and the hope of millions of others with various. neurological disorders is in Stem Cell Research. He told me before the election, "if the Republicans are elected into office, they will surely discontinue this research". Sure enough, Sunday, January 28, 2001 on "Meet the Press", which I have a copy of the transcript in front of me, quote: MR. RUSSERT: The first lady said Roe vs Wade should be overturned. Do you agree with the first lady? VICE PRES. CHENEY: I'm especially not interested in getting in the middle of discussions between the president and the first lady on those or other issues. MR. RUSSERT: Fetal-tissue research, using research of aborted fetuses to help learn things which may be helpful in treating Alzheimer's, President Bush will stop that research? VICE PRES. CHENEY: He's made it clear that when we get into the area of stem cell research-and clearly, a lot of that research is very promising-we need to find ways to do it that doesn't rely upon aborted fetuses for going forward with those basic studies. I think that's a firm position. He's been very consistent in the regard. And I think a lot of Americans support that view. In other words, the research will be put on hold until science can find other ways to develop stem cells. That could take another life-time, and takes away the hope of millions.
