Prevention The prevention of a stroke includes control of risk factors. Hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and other associated disorders should be treated as appropriate. Smoking should be minimized or, preferably, stopped. A low-cholesterol, low-salt diet may be appropriate if the risk factors include atherosclerosis or hypertension. Increased physical activity may be advised. (The treatment of TIA can prevent some strokes.)
