The Rail Assembly

PARTS SUPPLIED

  1. 1 x Lower rail section (45° cut at bottom) complete with charge point, lower stopping limit ramp and 2 wire cable.
  2. 1 x Upper rail section complete with 2 wire cable.
  3. Approximately 2 feet of gear rack, temporarily screwed to the underside of one of the rail sections, while in transit.
  4. 1 x black plastic charge point molding, to which two brass charge strips are fitted.
  5. 1 x black plastic stopping limit ramp molding.
  6. 4 x self-tapping screws.
  7. 1 x plug-in transformer.

* Items 3 & 4 will be fitted to the rail assembly, if you have supplied staircase dimensions.

JOINTED RAIL WIRING

The stairlift rail is shipped in two pieces that are spliced together during installation. The lower charge point and lower stopping limit ramp are installed on the lower rail section at the factory. If the rail was built to specific measurements supplied by you, the upper charge point and the adjustable stopping limit ramp will be fitted to the upper rail section. If you are using a ‘stock length’ rail, the upper rail section may need to be shortened with a broad bladed hacksaw and the ancillary parts will have to be fitted, as part of the installation process, described later in these instructions. (Fig.1)

Remove the section of gear rack, that is screwed to the underside of the rail and retain the gear rack and screws.

Connected to the lower charge point and running through the inside of the lower rail section is a two wire cable that terminates with two female wire connectors.

The upper rail section has a two wire cable running through its length. The cable has two male wire connectors at its lower end and a plastic connector block at its upper end. Also attached to the connector block, is a spur cable, attached to the upper charge point.

The two rail sections now need to be fixed together. Ease out the 1 inch square joint-bar fitted inside the box section of one of the two rail sections. This is done by loosening the 3 pinch bolts and sliding the bar out until it protrudes approximately 4 ½ inches. Re-tighten the pinch bolts to hold the joint-bar securely in place, using 2 x 10mm spanners. Connect the male and female wire connectors of the rail cable together (brown to brown, blue to blue).

Bring the two rail sections together, ensuring that there is no ‘openness’ in the joint. Tighten all six pinch-bolts, so that the rail sections are firmly fixed together (Fig.2).

CAUTION! Take care not to trap the 2 core cable that runs through the entire length of the rail in the joint (Fig.3).
There is a channel that runs the length of the upper side of the rail, that houses the gear rack. With the two rail sections joined together, you will notice that part of the rack, in the mid-section, is missing. The loose section of gear rack now needs to be installed, bridging the joint in the rail. Simply screw the section tightly into place.
Position the rail as one complete assembly on the staircase, with the lower (angled) end resting on the floor, at the bottom of the stairs and the steel toothed rack uppermost. Position the stair brackets (Fig.4) underneath the rail - one on the first step, one either side of the joint, on the closest available stair tread and one on the very top step. (Not on the landing)  The stair brackets clamp to the underside of the rail and are secured by tightening the long 13mm nut/bolt, which runs right through each bracket. Position the bracket so that it’s foot plate sits squarely on the stair tread and tighten the two short 13mm nut/bolts on either side of the bracket. Do not fix the bracket to the stair tread, at this time.
