 WmegaTrac® - A Giant Step Forward
In Powered Wheelchair Design
To attain the quality of life enjoyed by
the ambulatory for those who are unable to walk was the main mission of the designers of
the WmegaTrac®. This ultimately
spawned the radically different transmission steering system from TEFTEC which is the
heart of the WmegaTrac® powered wheelchair. Reports are coming
in from Wmegatrac® users from all styles of life......
A building inspector and appraiser who is using the WmegaTrac® told us we misnamed it. He said that we should have
called it "Freedom" because he feels like he has his legs back. He told us we
would not believe the grades he negotiates in his construction inspections.
A user in Tuscon selected his WmegaTrac®
because it was the only multi-purpose power chair that would fit into his office elevator.
A user in a rural part of the California desert was furnished an WmegaTrac®
because it was the only power chair available with the durability and speed to be his sole
transportation.
A young lady crossing a street in Los Angeles in an WmegaTrac® was broadsided by a Ford 250 truck which was stopped by
the impact. Both the F250 and the WmegaTrac® were damaged but
neither driver was hurt. The WmegaTrac® was driven from the
scene but needed wheel spiders and a seat frame. The young lady said she owed her life to
the WmegaTrac's strength.
An WmegaTrac®
was crash tested three times at EZ LOCK with loads up to 18 Gs with no damage. The WmegaTrac® was driven from the crash sled after both series of tests
and is still in service as a demonstrator. In two of these tests, the 175 pound dummy was
restrained by the WmegaTrac® own seat belt system, the most
severe configuration for testing.
Families who like camping or other outdoor activities and
fear that enjoyment is lost forever following a paralizing injury, are elated to find that
the WmegaTrac® is very capable of getting them back to the
same areas.
While the WmegaTrac® is well known
for its superior capabilities in all aspects of personal mobility, its unmatched safety of
operation is often just taken for granted. One of the most common comments from WmegaTrac® users is "when other power wheelchairs get you into
trouble, the WmegaTrac® will get you out".
The WmegaTrac® ability to resist
being pulled off course is nothing short of phenomenal. Users with little or no ability to
provide vernier steering corrections, such as those with sip and puff control, can travel
an undulating-surface path with confidence. Performing "figure eights" in any
direction on an ADA maximum slope ramp is a mundane excercise in an WmegaTrac®.
The direction of the greatest resistance to tipping is backwards, the direction that the
driver typically can not see. Tests for the FDA showed no tipping backwards, even to
grades of 100%. With reasonable care of operation, side and forward tipping do not occur
until grades exceed 3 times the ADA maximum. Large driveway lips that flip other power
wheelchairs or break casters off are only a nuisance with the WmegaTrac®.
Designed to supply a
smooth ride and maximum performance, WmegaTrac®
standard drive wheels are 16" pneumatic with non-marking gray tires and tubes.
Drive wheels are mounted on steel rims with aluminum wheel spiders for strength. Aluminum
split-rims are available as an option to easily accept flat free or tubeless style tires.
Split rim design makes changing flat free tubes and tires fast and easy when tires are
worn out. Both types of rims allow for maximum strength and durability while maintaining a
sleek, high-tech look.
Drive Wheel options include: 1) Flat Free Style Tires, 2) [Split]
Machined Cast Aluminum Split Rims accepting tubeless, tube type, or flat free tires.
Unlike plastic wheels used on many other wheelchairs, the WmegaTrac® uses aluminum wheel spiders to mount
drive wheels to the high strength steel hubs that in turn are mounted on the transaxle
drive axle-shafts. These cast aluminum spiders add strength, durability and a long service
life, and also provide a level of adjustment that other chairs cannot match. Drive wheel
configuration can be changed easily depending on the driver's need for added width,
stability, seat size or physical changes. Multiple adjustments can be made with the wheel
spider itself, and through the mounting position of the wheel rim. These adjustments can
be made in a minimum amount of time without the need to purchase expensive extras or
unnecessary parts. Other than an occasional cleaning to maintain their high-tech finish,
wheel spiders require no maintenance.
Wheel Spider Styles Available
include:
1) Standard Narrow Offset
Spiders,
2) Wide Offset Spiders, or
3) Custom Dual Wheel System,
allowing the addition of dual drive wheels when required for
additional stability or drive traction.

The WmegaTrac® drive wheel mounting system is
completed by stainless steel wheel hubcaps, precision machined to mount on 120 ksi steel
drive axles that are 1" at their smallest point.
WmegaTrac® caster wheels are
all metal split hubs, making caster tire changes fast and easy without the hassle of
stretching tires and tubes common with other types of hubs. Standard casters are 10"
x 3" with gray non-marking tires. All casters have sealed bearing assemblies for
smooth operation and precise tracking capabilities.
Caster Options are:
1) Flat Free Foam Filled
Tires, and
2) Solid Molded Style tires.
WmegaTrac's® patented caster
journals containing all heavy duty components, are fluid filled and sealed for years
of smooth operation. Caster flutter - a major problem with other powered wheel chairs - is
eliminated by the patented molecular shearing system contained in the swivel, allowing for
smooth driving, positive caster tracking and performance regardless of driving speed or
terrain.
